Jesus Was A Camper
Seven Pillars of Presence · Hit the Trail
The Signal and the Noise
Ballpark Half an hour or so. Give it room. This one’s worth not rushing.
Leave the phone inside. Go find out what your attention does when nothing’s pulling on it.

Gather
“Phone stays inside for this one. No timer, no music, nothing in your pocket buzzing. Just you and outside. Ready?”
Go
“Walk until you find a spot that feels like yours. Sit down.
Don’t try to clear your head — you can’t. Instead, just watch where your mind goes. It’ll reach for the phone. Notice that.
Stay until you’ve caught your mind wandering three separate times. Then come back.”
While they’re at it
Go do it too, out of earshot. Leave your phone inside as well — they’ll know if you didn’t, and this only works if you’re in it with them.
↯ If they go off-trail
If they say this is boring or pointless, that’s not resistance — that’s data. Boredom is what quiet feels like at first. Ask them to describe the boring, specifically.
Notice
“Where did your mind keep trying to go?
Was the quiet comfortable or uncomfortable? Be honest.
When’s the last time you sat with nothing pulling at you?”
Open
“Without speech or language, without a sound to be heard, their voice has gone out into all the earth.” Psalm 19:3–4
“David says creation’s been broadcasting this whole time — no notifications, no sound. If that’s true, the only reason to miss it is that something louder’s got your attention. What’s louder?”
Carry
“One day this week, leave your phone in another room for an hour. Just notice what you reach for it out of habit to do.”
A word for you
If a real doubt comes up — about God, about any of it — don’t rush to fix it. Let the question stand. Kids who get to ask out loud are the ones who stay.
